Monday 23rd October: Left 8:00am - arrived 2:20pm. (6hr 20mins.) 20ks became about 30ks due to our taking an alternative route which did not lead to Villdangos, having to backtrack after passing Villar de Mazarife and go cross country added about 10ks. The walk out of Leon was long, as is the case leaving the major cities. It continued to rain steadily, and upon meeting an elderly lady I asked, "¿Cuando va terminar la lluvia?" (When is the rain going to stop?) To which she replied, "Cuando El arriba lo quiere!" (When He above wants it to!) Her resigned attitude was reflected in her face and her eyes, which no doubt had witnessed more discomfort and heartache than that which we were presently experiencing. A reminder that perseverence and tolerance were irreplacible attitudes when it came to the Camino.
